6 egg whites , room temperature

2 sticks butter

2 c. sugar

1 c . milk

3 c. flour

3 tsp. baking powder

1 c. almonds , chopped

2 tsp. vanilla

1  fresh grated coconut or 2 c. packaged coconut

Beat egg whites until stiff ; set aside . In a separate bowl , blend butter , sugar and milk . Add flour , baking powder and coconut . Mix well . Fold in egg whites , then add almonds and vanilla . Pour batter into greased and floured tube pan . Bake at 275 degrees for 2-3 hours or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
